Tomjachu is an exclusive, family-owned private nature reserve set in over 550 hectares (1300 acres) of game fenced mountain bushveld, located within the Crocodile Valley Nature Conservancy. Just 20 minutes from Nelspruit it overlooks the southern boundary of the Kruger National Park and the great Crocodile River valley.

Regularly remarked upon as being one of the most beautiful and serene locations in the area, Tomjachu is in its own valley with breath-taking views across the Bekker Mountains. The Homestead and nearby cottages are surrounded by beautiful gardens, lawns and terraces, all sharing the greater splendours of nature. Perched high above the Homestead, our 5-star self-catering Valbonne Villa also offers spectacular views from its extensive veranda and infinity pool, which lies at eye level with the soaring eagles.

Whether you are looking for adventure or relaxation, with family, friends, or your loved one, Tomjachu offers something for everyone. On our trails, tracks and roads you can mountain bike through the bush on easy or challenging routes, hike amongst the abundant plains game and through mountains and valleys, go for a game drive or guided walk with our experienced ranger, and try your hand at fishing for bass and bream in our dams. Or simply unwind by the pool, listening to the orchestra of over 265 bird species, as the fresh mountain air trickles up from the valley below.

Tomjachu is the ideal place to explore all the wonders of the Lowveld.

We accommodate 14 Guests at the Homestead and three delightful cottages, each with their own unique character and romance. We are additionally blessed with spectacular bush locations to enjoy spectacular bush dinners under the stars, lit only with the flicker of lanterns or picnics by the water's edge or in one of our other picnic sites around the property. Whether self-catering or choosing to dine with us in our elegant dining room, with culinary delights served by our superb chef, good food and great atmosphere are assured.

Recently launched, our multi award-winning Valbonne Villa offers the exquisite luxury of a 5-star TGCSA, self-catering Villa suitable for 6 couples or 12 guests sharing – fully serviced.     We also adopt equitable business practises including charging fair prices for accommodation and services.   Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) are carried out throughout the lifecycle of our Tourism Operation   – including the planning, building and refurbishment stages,  and also to ensure that negative impacts are reduced to the minimum and maximising positive ones. We use resources sustainably, and reduce waste and over-consumption. 

    Natural diversity sustainably is managed well, and where appropriate restored; and consider the volume and type of tourism that the environment can support, and respect the integrity of vulnerable ecosystems and protected areas.

Features & Services

The Homestead  Our excellent kitchen provides first class home-style cooking with an elegant flair using mostly home-grown and organic ingredients. enjoy Angel fish, Beef fillet, Impala Pie, Homemade breads, ice crean sorbets and delightfull Canapes whilst drinking in the refreshing mountain air

Lapa Bush Braai  Perched on the edge of granite boulders, the Lapa is perfectly situated to enjoy an evening braai, whilst hearing the echoing bark of baboons and gentle calls of the bush babies.

South Dam  South Dam offers large grassy banks; a braai area and a shaded dining area, after a relaxing afternoon of fishing an a walk amongst the game  this spectaculr setting is perfect for a picnic or a braai as the sun sets behind Tomjachu hill over the waters.

Picnics Our kitchen can provide picnic baskets to be enjoyed whilst roaming the property, on foot or bike, or an expedition to the kruger or other activity. You ill find delicious sandwiches and wraps, home meade rusks and biscuits, homemade cakes, local fresh fruit and many more tasty treats to enjoy.


Our secret places.....

South Dam.  Situated on the souther most part of the property, South dam is home to a large variety of water birds as well as for those fishing enthusiasts wanting to catch a bream, barble or bass. while away restfull hours enjoying a picnic or braai on the banks of the dam or take a slow lazy row out on the water.

Zebra Heights.  Standing at 1030m, Zebra Heights gives you a breath-taking vantage point to Tomjachu Bush Retreat and surrounding mountains and landscape. Sip on a sundowner as te African Sun paints the sky an array of colours, Silhouetting the Acacia trees to give you a true feel of the African bush.

Matumi picnic spot. Surrounded by a canopy of Matumi trees and the sounds trickeling Crocodile River, this is the perfect way to switch off from the worls around you and take in the beauty of Tomjachu Bush Retreat has to offer.

The Lapa. Perched on the edge of a granite rock in the Crocodile Valley. The lapa is a surrounded with the remains of the Great Trek, An ideal Spot to enjoy an evening Bush braai, listening to the cries of the bushbabies and the bark of the baboons whilst huddled aroundthe open fire with a gentle light from the paraffin lanters.

Gordons Pools. The thick bush peels away to expose this wonderful, secluded spot at the foot of a gently trickling waterfall. Fill your lungs. with the fresh mountain air and enjoy a totally unique piicnic after a skinny dipin the clear spring water pools.

Symphony Dam. Symphony Dam lies tucked into a small gulley below the plains stretching down from the main gate. With views into the hills across the marsh, this little dam is a great spot to let time wash over you whilst watching the Bee-eaters flit in and out of their holes in the dam wall. The orchestra of frogs starts tuning up in the early evening whitch in when the dam truly lives up to its name.

Bird Watching  With over 265 diffrent species including seasonal migrants and a large variety of habitats in close proximity, Tomjachu Bush Retreat is the ideal place for bird enthusiasts to freely roam the extensive 30 kilometres of tracks and trails without the threat of dangerous animals. From witnessing a Fish Eagle plucking a bass from South Dam to patiently watching the Masked Weavers methodically building their nest or be completely enthralled by the Dabchicks skating across North Dam, the sightings are endless. there have even been sightings of the rare and illusive Blue Swallow.

Hiking  The hiking trails at Tomjachu Bush Retreat will leave you with a memorable experience for years to come. From the tough climb of Zebra Heights to the riverine walks along the Tipperary River and unspoilt thicket to an extraordinary ancient canyon with waterfalls and pools, there is a trail to suit any fitness level. Walk amongst the wildlife in the open plains and enjoy the true beauty of Tomjachu Bush Retreat. There is no better place to learn the unseen secrets of the bush then on one of our guided walks with our game ranger. open your eyes to  wonderful world of the African bushveld.

Fishing  With Carp, Bream, Barble and Bass at South Dam, there's always a good chance of being rewarded with a bite or two and the ever famous "it was this big" could certainly become reality. And when the hours fly by, and the sun set over the water, what could be better than lighting up the braai or enjoying a picnic at the water’s edge.

Nature  Drives  Enjoy an early morning or late afternoon game drive in our 10 seater open Safari Landrover. Our professional game guide will introduce you to the wonders of the Lowveld bush, where you will see a huge variety of African game, hundreds of birds species and diverse plant life. We have a high number of various biomes and habitats on the property, with high rocky peaks, wetlands, plains, dams and ravines.

Some of the species you can expect to see are:

Zebra, Giraffe, Wildebeest, Kudu, Ostrich, Bushbuck, Blesbok, Waterbuck, Nyala Impala, Red Duiker, Common Duiker, Mountain Reedbuck, Klipspringer,  Jackal, Warthog, Wild Pig, Porcupine, Honey Badger, Bushbaby, Genet, Civet, Vervet Monkey, Baboon and Cape Clawless Otter.

Mountain Biking Tomjachu offers self-guided Mountain Biking Trails [MTB] with identifiable routes for both beginners and intermediate riders. These routes take you through open Savannah Bushveld and riverine on a combination of 'farm' roads and marked single tracks of between 4km and 12km circuits. You could encounter giraffe, zebra, kudu, wildebeest, ostrich, warthog and other plains game, abundant birdlife and spectacular vistas. While some of the routes may be challenging, riders are able to set their own pace.

Bring your own mountain bike and helmet, or simply hire one of ours (book in advance to avoid disappointment!). Should you wish to make a day of it take a 'bike pack' and stop for a picnic en-route at any one of the beautiful sites on the property.

The property holds so much natural beauty, energy and history – including Voortrekker wagon trails that are still very evident. This spectacular location nestled within the Bekker Mountains will make your ride an indelible memory.
