Nomad Tanzania Wildebeest Migration Report

Conditions fit for the ark up north but big herds gather in the south

The last few weeks have seen very heavy rain in the northern Serengeti with the Mara River ready to burst its banks and rather sticky conditions for anyone operating up there.  Most camps in the Lamai area are still closed for the rainy season but further south, the migration is hotting up.

Our Serengeti Safari Camp is still open and the guides working in the Ndutu/Moru area report that the herds are still stretching between Ndutu, Naabi and the Gol Kopjes and even a little bit towards Lemuta, but also now slowly moving towards Moru, the Hidden Valley towards the Western Corridor.

Confused about the migration or want to know where you should be at which times of the year?  Here's a really quick, simple guide to who's doing what with whom and when in the Serengeti.

Wall-to-wall wildebeest

Well, it's all happening in the Serengeti, you'll be pleased to hear.  The rains have returned and with them, the wild-beasties have come flooding back into Ndutu.  Our Nomad guides report that they're everywhere, all over the place, wall-to-wall wildebeest...totally amazing and full, full, full.  Which is just the way we like it frankly.

If you want specifics, you'll find herds around Naabi/Ndutu/Triangle/Masek and the plains.

They've not yet reached Nduara though but there has been substantial rain there recently, so they should be heading in that direction.  Oooh...it's just nail-biting stuff.  Keep an eye on the blog for more updates and we'll try and post photos soon.

Good gnus come to those who wait...

February has been very dry in the Serengeti, with just a few showers that have not stimulated that much needed green flush in the Ndutu short grass plains.  As a result, the herds have been very dispersed; some heading into the Central Serengeti while others have disappeared into the Hidden Valley and Maswa.  Visitors to the park have often had to drive out all day in search of the action and some have very sadly been disappointed, although that said, the cats around the Ndutu area have been out in force and we've had some great cheetah and lion sightings so it's by no means all bad "gnus".  It really is a reminder that there is no sure thing in nature.  The good news is that the rains are falling again around Ndutu and up in the Lamai area.  Our guides tell us that the wildebeest are trickling in and starting to re-group.  Fingers crossed they now follow their well-trodden routes so we can be there with front row seats.  Remember to check out all the fabulous photos and interesting stories from life in the bush on the other Nomad Blogs.
