Dear Linette, A bongo sighting takes good timing in the Republic of Congo's Nouabale-Ndoki National Park. I have seen them fleeing into the forest there on a few occasions. Sightings of bongo can be better during the dry season (Feb/March)further up the Sangha River from Nouabale, in Dzanga-Ndoki National Park in the Central African Republic. Bongo are known to frequent a clearing there called Dzanga Bai. LN

If you are a group of tourists on your own self drive tour it is possible to enter Tanzania and visit the parks with a Kenyan registered vehicle. If you are a Kenyan tour operator carrying tourists, you run the risk of being stopped at any point and refused entry or hassled. Remember that the Bologonja border post between the Serengeti and the Masai Mara is closed to foreigners. You can pass through Namanga, or the Tarime-Isabania borders. You need to pay for Car Insurance for Tanzania, and your road tax for a foreign vehicle which used to be only payable in US $$, but now the East African Community is in force, I think you can pay the East African rate in Tshs. The same goes for park fees for the vehicle. This used to be payable only in US $$ for a foreign vehicle and cost a lot more, but now it should be less and payable in Tshs. Unfortunately sometimes the guys at the gates do not know the East African Community regulations and may charge Foreign fees for Kenyan vehicles. As long as you dont mind paying the foreign fees in US $$ for the vehicle as well, you should have no problems visiting parks in Tanzania with a Kenyan vehicle.

Dear Castro, It is possible to self-drive in Tanzania using Kenyan registered vehicles but there are some requirements: 1. A valid COMESA or other suitable Insurance for the vehicle (Third party minimum). Therefore the car hire company should contact a local Insurer in Nairobi as they should know about this. (Hawkers see Insurance at the border and this should be avoided). 2. If the stay is more than a week they will have to get at the border a temporary Tz vehicle road licence which costs about $35.00 may be more now, for a month. 3. The car hire company can save a lot of time for them at the border if they complete temporary export procedures at Kenya Customs in Nairobi otherwise they have to have the original logbook which will be surrendered at Namanga or wherever they enter TZ. 4. When they enter parks they will be required to pay a fee for the car which is about $35.00 per day. This detail should be on The TANAPA website. Regards, Rupert Finch Hatton
