Tuli Safari Lodge hosts Children in the Wilderness
Tuli Safari Lodge is delighted to be hosting the Children in the Wilderness Limpopo Valley camp, which is taking place in the Northern Tuli Game Reserve, Botswana from 25thNovember to 1st December 2011. The aim of the camp is to teach the importance of conservation and provide children from a local village with life skills and the opportunity to participate in educational and team-building activities in a unique and safe wilderness environment.
Tuli Safari Lodge will host the six day camp for 24 children from Mothlabaneng Primary School. Members of staff from across all departments – guiding, front of house, food & beverage, maintenance, accounts and housekeeping – will support the Children in the Wilderness programme coordinators and activity leaders. The lodge will also provide all the logistics, transport and food for the camp, and key members of staff have been selected as room leaders who are each assigned 4 children to mentor and care for.
The camp curriculum will cover life skills, environmental education and recreation. Topics include the geology and geography of the region; the area's wildlife and its conservation; careers available in the tourism industry; arts and crafts; theatre; nutrition, sport, health and HIV/AIDS. Morning or afternoon game drives are also an essential part of each day.
The programme is continued in the local communities with the support of Children in the Wilderness staff, to help ensure that the principles learned in camp are continually reinforced and extended to the entire community.
Children in the Wilderness is an environmental and life skills educational programme that focuses on the next generation of rural decision makers. By the end of 2011, 4065 children will have been hosted at Children in the Wilderness camps across 7 Southern African countries.
Responsible tourism is key to Tuli Safari Lodge’s operating philosophy. We are committed to protecting and conserving the area’s environment and wildlife, and contributing to community upliftment through employment, business opportunities and charitable programmes.
The Children in the Wilderness Limpopo Valley camps are also supported by Tuli Wilderness Trails, Mashatu Game Reserve and fund raised by the Tour de Tuli cycle event as well as various private donors.
About Children in the Wilderness
Children in the Wilderness is an environmental and life skills educational programme that focuses on the next generation of rural decision makers. It is one of the few programmes aimed at bridging the divide that exists between communities and wildlife. Children in the Wilderness hosts rural children that live alongside our Parks and Reserves and teaches them the importance of conservation. The Children in the Wilderness programme aims to develop environmental leaders who are inspired to care for their natural heritage so that they become the custodians of these areas in the future. Children in the Wilderness exposes children to their wildlife heritage, builds and strengthens their capabilities to cope with life's challenges and educates them with the life skills necessary to actualize their greatest potential.
