30th Lake Malawi Sailing Marathon
By Ulendo SafarisThis year the Lake Malawi Sailing Marathon will celebrate its 30thanniversary, and as flocks of adrenaline-junkies arrive at the lake to take part, it’s set to be one of the best year’s yet.
This year’s marathon will take place from June 28th until July 5th.
This epic test of speed, endurance, and sheer determination first took place in 1984, born by a group of sailors in the form of a casual sail northward up the Lake. Deck chairs lashed to the hulls, this tranquil route running South to North was just a hobby, but it wasn’t long until competition slipped in. Now, it’s become an annual event.
There will be two distinct competitions within the 2014 Marathon – one for classes that carry spinnakers, and one for classes that do not. Within each competition, boats will be rated according to a handicap system prescribed by the committee. There will be a daily winner for each competition, and two competition winners at the end of the event, based on shortest elapsed time corrected by handicap.
