New e-passport gates at Terminal 5
New e-passport gates at Terminal 5 make arrivals easier.
15 of the newest generation E-passport gates have now opened at London Heathrow Terminal 5, allowing arriving customers to get through the UK border more quickly.
Automated e-passport gates offer an alternative to conventional passport checks.
Customers simply scan their e-passport at the barrier. The system runs a face recognition check against the chip in their passport and then, if they’re eligible to enter the UK, the gate will open automatically – all in a matter of seconds.
Customers need to be over 18 and to have an e-passport (shown by the ‘chip’ logo on the front), issued by a country in the European Economic Area or Switzerland.
