Elewana AfroChic Diani welcomes 113 baby turtles to the world
By Alia Bellamy, Elewana AfricaBack in March there was excitement as a new Turtle trail was found coming up from the sea leading onto our beach area. The team followed the trail and realised that we had another Turtle’s nest, making it our second nest of season 2018. We protected the nest and straight away the count began.
The first nest in our turtle hatchery for 2018 was placed on 10th February with over a hundred eggs in the beach and recently (April) saw all 113 eggs hatch successfully. It was a great moment to see the last baby turtle making its way to the sea! We are expecting the second to hatch in the next few weeks.
The sex of a turtle is determined by the temperature of the nest and in most cases, eggs from warmer nests hatch as all females so with this in mind, the first nest had mostly warm weather so the majority should be female but the next could be all male as the last couple of months has been wet and cold.
Stay tuned for updates as we work to save these endangered species and bring you exciting news from our hatchery!
