Lions return to the Great Karoo at Samara Private Game Reserve
Samara Private Game ReserveMore than 180 years ago, the Great Karoo was roamed by the majestic Cape lion – a particularly magnificent black-maned subspecies. Wiped out by hunters, their relatives are being welcomed back to Samara Private Game Reserve near Graaff-Reinet thanks to an ambitious re-introduction project. Samara is now home to a founder pride of lions as part of a project to return the Karoo to the state of astounding biodiversity it once enjoyed. Their presence on the reserve will help to restore a once thriving ecosystem.

Elewana elated with increased Leopard sightings in Loisaba
Elewana AfrikaEarlier in the year we published a feature on the conservation program being conducted by San Diego Zoo Global on the leopard’s in Loisaba Conservancy and the valuable research that is carried out. It is so rewarding when the work being done pays off and with this we have had increased leopard sights in the area. Tracking the location of leopard sightings is mapped through a Citizen Science Initiative using tablet and SMART technology.

The Serengeti Girls Run: Striving Towards a Common Goal

SingitaBetween 97,796 and 140,615 wildebeest are killed illegally by poachers in the Serengeti every year. In addition to this, the relentless and escalating demand for high-value wildlife products such as rhino horn, elephant ivory, lion bone and pangolin scales has driven the illegal hunting of these and other species to levels not seen in decades. The challenge of securing the resident game falls to a 120-strong team of dedicated anti-poaching scouts. In addition to having boots on the ground 24 hours a day, a canine unit created in partnership with Working Dogs for Conservation (WD4C), aims to deter would-be poachers from entering the concession.

Flatdogs Camp Extends its Support of Conservation and Community Projects
Flatdogs CampFrom 2019 Flatdogs Camp has increased the contribution we make to conservation and community projects by 50% (now $15 per bed night in high season). This will allow us to support the Zambian Carnivore Program in their important research. The Luangwa Conservation and Community Fund (LCCF) was set up by some safari operators as a voluntary contribution to local organisations to assist with the running costs of important projects. In 8 years Flatdogs Camp has raised around $220,000 which we have split between Conservation South Luangwa (www.cslzambia.org) and Project Luangwa (www.projectluangwa.org).

It’s a boy! Saruni Rhino welcomes a new baby
SaruniOn the 7th October 2018, the total count of rhino in the Rhino Sanctuary in Sera Conservancy (Northern Kenya), home to Saruni Rhino lodge, became 15 when it welcomed a new male calf. This confirms Sera Conservancy’s success as a unique conservation project in Kenya. Born to ‘Nairrenyu’ (Sala), the young male has been named by the community as ‘Ltupunywa’ which means ‘born when we weren’t expecting to give birth that month’ in the Maa language. Translated in English – ‘Surprise!’.

A community-based Conservation Music production in Zimbabwe with African Bush Camps
African Bush CampsThe month of September was a unique and exciting one for the communities in the Dete area, on the border of Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe. Conservation Music, an organization dedicated to environmental music production workshops stayed at Mambanje Primary School to learn and co-produce a song and music video about the community based conservation challenges, ethos and efforts in the area.

Guests at Elewana Tortilis Camp love Seedballing
Elewana AfrikaGuests staying at our property in Amboseli, Elewana Tortilis Camp have been buying packets of Seedballs. So far this year it is estimated that approximately 8,325 seed balls have been purchased With an expected 63% growth success rate, this could equate to over 5000 potential new acacia shoots in the Kitirua Conservancy, which should be visible within the next few months. The General Managers had set a target to distribute 10,000 seed balls this year and it looks as though they will reach that easily.
