Elewana Tortilis Camp: The Pleistocene Lake in Amboseli is awash with Pink

The name "Amboseli" comes from a Maasai word meaning "salty dust" and the National Park is renowned for its majestic views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the large herds of elephant that roam its dusty and stunningly arid landscape. Amboseli National Park covers 392km² and has a mixed topography of plains, acacia woodland, rocky thorn bush, swamps and marshes. This diversity, along with a long dry season, ensures excellent viewing of animals living in this natural habitat.

Rare sighting of black or melanistic serval cat at Elewana Tortilis Amboseli

We are very excited to share this amazing sighting of a black melanistic serval cat spotted by our guide Juma Patrick in Amboseli. The photographs were captured by Marco Strullu, who was a guest at Elewana Tortilis Camp at the time. Serval cats are similar in size to Caracals and are classed as medium sized cats, however they are more slender and taller with a weight that ranges from 9 to 13 kgs in adults.

UK ad campaign launches for Tanzania

A print campaign has been launched for Tanzania this month, with the first full-page ad appearing in the December issue of BBC Wildlife. Tanzania Country Manager at Kamageo - Lisa Burton - explained that "The campaign highlights that Tanzania delivers the very same safari experiences that you dreamt of so excitedly as a child". The campaign uses the headline "Live out your wildest dreams" and is funded by TANTOO, the private sector initiative, launched by Kamageo earlier this year.

Serena Hotels and Mettle Solar OFGEN have officially opened “Kenya’s First Fully Solar powered Lodge”. Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge located in Tsavo West National Park implemented a fully-fledged solar power plant to provide for its entire power requirements and enhance environmental sustainability. The solar power plant is installed under a lease arrangement and produces 307kWp utilizing SMA Solar offgrid technology with 670kWh of usable lead acid battery storage, with the capacity to supply Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge’s total energy requirements during normal weather conditions.
