Food, Glorious Food!
By *Phillip Lategan, Journey BeyondThey say that the way to a person’s heart is through their stomach, but choosing to enjoy local specialties on an African holiday is the best way to get in tune with the place that you’re visiting.
Africa features some of the best places in which to enjoy a memorable meal or surprising snack. Whether you’re visiting the Cape Winelands or the Spice Island of Zanzibar, enjoying local cuisine will give you a real taste of your destination.
The continent’s rich cultural heritage is reflected in many wonderful local dishes and drinks, so be sure to try as many as you can (a braai in South Africa, a boma evening at a safari lodge in Botswana, or a cup of freshly brewed Kenyan coffee).
Once you’ve acquired a taste for all things African, why not experience a food- or drink-themed holiday? Wine tours are understandably popular, and there are now even African cooking courses that get you into the kitchen yourself.
The combination of fresh flavours and superb dining experiences makes eating in Africa unforgettable. Enjoy a romantic dinner for two in a wine cellar, or let your kids make their own pizzas with a helping hand from the lodge chefs. Sushi tastes best on a boat, naturally, and a champagne breakfast after a hot air balloon flight over the Great Wildebeest Migration will stay in your memory forever.
