The first dedicated elephant nursery in South Africa

Up until now, HESC has been providing a home for baby elephant orphans, since it is so well-equipped with amazing facilities for problem animals, with quarantine and boma areas. Over the last three years, four orphans have arrived on our doorstep. The decision, however, has recently been made to move the orphans from HESC to Jabulani and to build a new nursery closer to the stables of the Jabulani herd.

As the season begins to come to an end and the rains start arriving in the Masai Mara, it’s time for us at Ol Seki Hemingways Mara to take a little break and start our annual maintenance projects. You’ll recall last year we invested significantly in the back of house operations of the camp including installing a new solar power farm to completely remove the camp from grid and electricity power. This has been a huge success and has been extremely well received by our guests. We also built a new kitchen and we are delighted to see the improvement in our cuisine which has resulted from the improved kitchen facility. This year we’re looking at the front of house and the guest experience and to that end, we’re extremely excited to publicise, for the first time, some detailed information about our new pool which we have been promising.

Explorers against Extinction to help safeguard the world’s tallest mammal

Explorers against Extinction (EAE) is pleased to announce that it will be supporting the work of Giraffe Conservation Foundation (GCF) in Uganda through its 2019 initiatives. EAE has pledged funds towards the translocation of critically endangered Nubian Giraffe from Murchison Falls to picturesque Pian Upe in the north-east of Uganda. Re-introduction of iconic species such as giraffe to the reserve will also help to bolster eco-tourism in this region, which includes neighbouring Kidepo. EAE is organised annually by UK based conservation charity the Real World Conservation Trust. The focus of the campaign is to raise awareness as well as funds to protect threatened wildlife and wild spaces.

Breaking Records for African Parks

At the end of this month, Steppes Travel's Africa Product Manager, Rob Gardiner, will begin his attempt to break a cycling world record, in support of African Parks. Leaving from Tarifa, Spain, he is aiming to become the fastest person to cycle the length of Europe. The journey will take him all the way to Nordkapp, Norway, within the Arctic Circle. To beat the current time of 21.5 days, he will need to cycle more than 300 kilometres a day, travelling unsupported. Not content with targeting one world record, he has already broken another as part of his training. In April, he set a new record for the most countries cycled through in a week. His tally of 17 was two more than the existing record and saw him spend up to 18 hours cycling each day, as he travelled from The Netherlands to Macedonia.

Tongole Wilderness Lodge is excited to finally be within the fenced sanctuary area of Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve (NKKWR). The fence was initially erected by African Parks to ensure a safe and controlled release of the 500 elephants and other wildlife that was translocated from Liwonde and Majete to Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve in 2016 and 2017. The fence line has now been extended further to include Tongole, making the sanctuary a huge 80,000 hectares; almost half of the NKKWR.

He met Jane Goodall when he was 16, and impressed her with his knowledge of chimpanzees, and with a drawing he had done of a chimp.  Mwiga has worked with Nomad Tanzania for over 20 years, all at Greystoke Mahale, and is without doubt one of the leading primatology guides on the continent. His passion, insatiable curiosity and commitment to the chimpanzees is undeniable, and we were thrilled that he had the opportunity to feature on "Faces of Africa" last week.
