A New Look For Clifftop

Extraordinary' s Clifftop Exclusive Safari Hideaway has pushed design boundaries and the aesthetic of African safari luxury since its inception. In anticipation of the recovery of South African tourism in 2021, the Extraordinary team embarked on an ambitious project to elevate this jewel of Welgevonden Private Game Reserve to the next level.

A glamourous refashioning commenced at the start of 2021 and has now reached completion—well in time for the Easter holidays. The talented Group Interior Design Executive, Esley Georgiou, has created a fresh aesthetic that maximises the breath-taking views of the unparalleled surroundings and of the lodge’s clifftop position, which enhances a private space for the discerning safari enthusiast. An adults–only zone of sanctuary and luxury—the lodge now boasts new, bespoke furniture and fittings throughout.

From the moment of arrival, the tranquil colours invite and soothe the traveller. The use of light, natural tones, which blend gently with the surrounding landscape, maintain the distinctive theme of Clifftop. As one of the first lodges to use the timeless colour palette of whites and greys, this romantic setting has always embraced its unique design. An inspiring, three–metre-high chandelier dominates the entrance vestibule. Crafted from recycled materials and bleached wood, it is suspended from the triple volume space and emulates a cluster of protea flowers (the South African national flower). The stunning new outdoor deck spaces, mindfully styled with half–moon seating nodes and shimmering swinging nests suspended from the thatched roof, establish an ambiance of serenity and understated luxury.

Sustainability is a core value at Clifftop Exclusive Safari Hideaway. In this regard, a proudly South African approach was taken in ensuring that all of the elements were produced and sourced locally. The support of SMME companies, which all have previously disadvantaged backgrounds, was of vital importance to the property. The use of Environ paints, a water-based natural paint product that is dedicated to preserving the environment and ensuring a greener future, set the pace and was followed by using recycled materials wherever possible.

Massive transformations to all eight suites were curated, with the additions of sleek silver and grey headboards as well as bed-end ottomans, which create a sense of lavishness whilst the natural wood branches preserve an earthy style that pairs seamlessly with the ruggedly beautiful surroundings. The careful use of natural elements and tones, including wood and stone, paired with the opulence of the well–appointed furnishings, create an irresistible feeling of sanctuary. A cosy L-shaped cocoon overlooks the outside deck with its sparkling private plunge pool. The gorgeous and spacious bathrooms boast new vanities, baths and a view to die for. Don’t miss the experience of the outdoor shower–suspended above the fifty-metre plunge down the cliff to the Sterkstroom River below. A modern light Oak hospitality/workspace offers a minibar as well as tea and coffee stations to ensure that guests have everything that they need at their fingertips.

The overall contemporary feel of the lodge is one of an exceptional space, perched on the edge of the world. Suspended somewhere between the absolute bliss of seclusion and the necessity of luxury and elegance, Clifftop has transitioned into a truly spectacular safari escape.
