We attract families with children and small groups (photographers, naturalists and adventurers) looking for a private, adventurous and authentic safari experience with first-class wildlife experiences in an exclusive environment.  The lodge is known for its emphasis on sustainability and self sufficiency for those interested in Homestead Living. 

We offer hearty, organic food straight from our garden and meat from farm and milk products from our small, calf friendly dairy.  The warm and nuturing team is known for top notch Kenyan hospitality, knowledgeable, home-grown guides.

The lodge is located in the foothills of Mount Kenya on El Karama Ranch, a 14,000 acre privately owned working cattle ranch with stunning landscapes and abundant wildlife and birds. It is the only tourism lodge on the property.

Guests can enjoy direct views of Mount Kenya, the Aberdares and the Lolldaiga hills and sleep with the calming sounds of the Ewaso Nyiro river and the distant and not so distant sounds of wildlife from the salt lick opposite.

We are only 42km from Nanyuki town and the local airstrip there services transport links and scheduled flights from around the country using Safarilink, Air Kenya and Jambo Jet. Private Charters can be organised with East African Air Charters based in Nairobi or Tropic Air Kenya, based in Nanyuki, to arrive directly at the property on the private airstrip, which is just 2 km from the lodge.

This lodge is intimate and comprises just 2 family/group friendly stone, thatch and canvas cottages and 4 double “bandas”, a large eco swimming pool and dining room and river dining room overlooking the salt lick and natural outdoor fire pit for star gazing.

For 2019, we also have 2 brand new luxurious River Cottages with a private dining room and kitchen, for smaller groups looking for even more privacy and a touch of luxury!  These new private camp brings the total number of cottages tin the lodge to 8 in total, sleeping a maximum of 20 people in busy seasons.

Guests can relax in front of large fireplaces or open fire pits under the stars depending on their preference. There is are cosy reading areas, hammocks for lounging and a large and lovingly created eco swimming pool (100% salt and chlorine free), which has been named the best pool in Laikipia.  

The lodge is hosted by a fantastic team of Kenyans trained by the Owners over 15 years, many of the team built the lodge originally. The Owners/Founders Sophie and Murray Grant, live next to the lodge full time with their two children, chickens and bunny rabbits and often meet guests. Murray Grant is an exceptional wildlife sculptor known for his stunning wildlife bronzes www.murraygrantbronzes.com. 

Our aim is to offer a unique, authentic and tailor-made experience wherever possible including offering the option to dine privately or have exclusive use of our open game drive cars.

Our guests can enjoy for following activities with first-class guiding experiences:

-Guided bush walks - from 2 - 5 hours inclyuding full day walks for wildlife monitoring

-Tracking with the anti-poaching rangers

-Night drives with spotlight

We are also the first lodge in Laikipia to offer tailor-made children's' activities unique to this property. Our morning 'bush school' is designed for children between 2 and 12 years. Our set up includes a natural history corner, kids welcome packs, clay sculpting, fishing and specialized meal plans for families. The lodge can also provide basic babysitting for families with very small children on request.

We have over 80 mammal species including lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, buffalo, hippo, reticulated giraffe, common and Grevy’s zebra, gerenuk, eland, oryx and much more.

The lodge won the 2018 Eco Warrior Award, presented by the Permanent Secretary for Tourism for Kenya. It has been awarded Silver rating and we are headed for Gold by Eco Tourism Kenya. Also voted one of the Top 5 Best Ecologically Responsible Properties in Kenya (Safari Awards 2016 and 2017, 2018), Best Family Destination, Best Cuisine, Best Design and was named the 'Hidden Gem of Laikipia' by the Daily Nation Newspaper and 'Laikipia's Finest' by the Standard Newspaper.

From February 2018, we also have the Little River Camp offering 2 brand new luxurious river cottages with a private dining room, for smaller groups looking for even more privacy and a touch of luxury!  These new rooms bring the total number of doubles to 6 and the family cottages to 2 - 8 in total.

How to Rewild with El Karama Lodge, Laikipia Kenya

El Karama Lodge has been steadily refining its unique Re- Wilding and safari adventure programmes for groups and families this year in Laikipia Kenya.   Thanks to a new creative collaboration with the team at Finnegan Flint www.finneganflint.com, who also shot the amazing short film on East Africa’s first Dhow made from recycled Plastic, El Karama Lodge’s story is now ready to share with all of you.

Wildlife Education at El Karama Lodge, Laikipia: Tracks and Signs Course May 24/25/26 2019 with Professional Guide Andreas Fox

El Karama Lodge, Laikipia's family-focussed eco lodge is hosting their 2019 Tracks and Signs Short Course on May 24th to 26th 2019.  The lodge has been offering a unique events and short course calendar for the past 3 years including enigmatic speakers such as Adventurer Charley Boorman, Environmental Activist and Author George Monbiot, Explorer Col John Blashford-Snell and Paleoanthropologist Don Johanson.  Short Courses have included Tracking, Walking with Dangrous Game, Botany, Entomology, Geology, Open Air Cooking and Astronomy.
