Lengai Camp is a small, exclusive safari camp, at the base of Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano in Tanzania's Rift Valley. Surrounded by open plains and seven small volcanic craters, it has spectacular views of Ol Doinyo Lengai, Kitumbeine, Gelai and Kerimasi mountains. It is not far from the Rift Valley escarpment and Empakai crater in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
Off the beaten path, the camp is just three hours drive from Arusha or Manyara and a day's drive from Serengeti. Charter flights are also available. Apart from regular safaris, hikers from Empakai and Ngorongoro Highlands, or those climbing Ol Doinyo Lengai and Kerimasi mountains will find the high standard of the camp appealing. Lake Natron is an important draw, along with pre-historic hominid footprints and wildlife in the area, especially notable from December to June.
Owned by Michel Mantheakis, Lengai Camp is run by a competent local safari crew. Michel's background in Zoology and Wildlife Science combined with a passion for wildlife and conservation, has led to a 30-year career operating exceptional safaris throughout Tanzania, experience he has applied to this camp.
Protecting wildlife together with local Maasai communities and Tanzania's Wildlife Department, are a daily routine and key element of the company's philosophy. Lake Natron Game Controlled Area (West) stretches from Engaruka in the South, to the Kenyan border in the North, an area covering more than 1700 square kilometers with spectacular scenery. Lengai Camp visitors, accompanied by a ranger, have full access to this vast and picturesque area.
