The Explorations Company has been creating extraordinary, utterly bespoke, safaris and holidays since 1988. Almost everyone working within our business originates from Africa (or India); this is crucial because these continents are our passion which, with a vast amount of knowledge and an exceptional degree of personal service, drives a commitment to ensuring that each client has the holiday of a lifetime. Just as the perfect suit is painstakingly personally and individually tailored, so is each and every holiday that we create; every person is unique and no two holidays ever been the same! We cover a very wide potential brief: whether a first time safari to Africa, a focused special-interest holiday where one may perhaps be searching for a particular species, a personally guided safari with one of Africa’s finest guides, a historically- or culturally-focused sojourn or a wonderful, rewarding family holiday - a great favourite for us. Potential activities are legion and include wildlife viewing, cultural interaction, horse riding, walking (perhaps from point to point and “flycamping” en route with all equipment carried by camels), photography with expert guides, canoeing, fishing, cycling, watersports or, of course, just relaxing in some of the world’s most stunning locations. Whatever the focus we use only the most appropriate lodges, properties and camps; these might range from highly luxurious to the more down to earth and from permanent properties to camps that are semi or fully mobile (yet often still be relatively luxurious!) and erected just for our clients’ use. Each of our clients also, by default, supports a range of focused charitable causes.

Our Commitment to Responsible Tourism

“Putting Something Back” has been central to our business ethic since inception in 1988. Every client who travels with us makes a voluntary contribution to our charitable fund which we then supplement through internal and externally sourced means. Monies raised are then used in supporting usually small but always highly effective organisations and projects where every cent can “do the most good”. Fields supported thus far have, broadly speaking, included wildlife conservation, health, education, clean water, agriculture, community conservation and, occasionally, emergency relief.  Our usual modus operandum is to focus upon sustainable locally organised projects such as community-built schools or on-the-ground conservation initiatives however we do also support geographically wider-ranging organisations when we can be sure that funding is very effective; a good example being the wonderful work done by Excellent Development in creating Sand Dams in dryland areas of Africa (and India).

Remot Primary School

Remot primary school was established in 2007 as a preschool on the north western boundary of the Westgate Community Conservancy, near Samburu, Kenya, to provide education for families which are not in the catchment for existing schools. The school was recently upgraded to a full primary school with two classrooms but, part form school development per se, one of the core aims is to help the families in the Westgate Community who live further away and have to date not received the same benefits as those who live closer by. Our support assists a long term development plan for the school which now has an enrolment of 141 pupils.

Excellent Development

Excellent Development supports subsistence farmers and their families to gain access to clean water and grow more food to eat, store and sell. The charity primarily supports and assists communities to build sand dams, based on an ancient core technology that provides clean water and the potential to invest time in sustainable agriculture. Sand dams can be built anywhere there are seasonal rivers with sandy sediment – conditions that are found across the world’s drylands. However there are currently less than 150 sand dams being built every year worldwide and Excellent’s mission is to change this, working in Sudan, Kenya and Mozambique.
