Our Commitment to Responsible Tourism

Socially Responsible Travel: The concept is simple – tourism generated income helps build sustainable solutions in local communities.

Responsible Travel: More than just ecotourism, responsible travel is an approach to tourism that maximizes the benefits to local communities, minimizes negative social or environmental impacts and helps local people to conserve fragile cultures and habitats.

Accommodation: Where possible, we try to avoid large international hotels in favour of small individual eco-lodges. This is so we can try to channel tourism generated income into local populations as much as possible.

Educational Information Packs: Through comprehensive travel packs we provide our clients with educational information on ecotourism, how it works and the benefits it brings to both the country and the travel industry as a whole.

Our Guides: Our guides receive ongoing training in conservation, environmental awareness, first aid and how best to guide you throughout your stay. Beyond this education they are experienced drivers and have a wealth of knowledge about all the little things that will make your trip unforgettable!

RSC Office and Staff: Our office has an environmental assessment policy. As a small office, waste, energy use and omissions are all kept to a minimum. We also employ Malawians as Safari Consultants, drivers and guides, helping to put money directly back into local hands.

Project Links: RSC has linked with a number of communities around Malawi working hand in hand with local projects to encourage eco-tourism initiatives.

Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES): By choosing to travel with The Responsible Safari Company you have shown your commitment to sustainable travel. We believe that a core element of sustainable travel is actively ensuring the future protection of the areas you visit. Malawi offers a beautiful and diverse landscape of mountains, forests, rivers and lakes as well as a rich cultural history and we want to keep it this way. To protect this diversity both for Malawians and international visitors we are committed to supporting efforts to ensure the protection of Malawi’s ecosystems through our ‘Payment for Ecosystem Services Scheme.’ (PES).

What is PES? 1.5% of your holiday cost will go towards paying for the conservation, protection and enhancement of the ecosystems you will benefit from during your stay in Malawi. For example your walks through the lush rainforest in central Malawi, your clean water swim in Lake Malawi, your hike up the forested slopes of Mount Mulanje or your visit to local community in rural Malawi.

Where does this donation go? RSC donates 100% of PES to local Malawian projects. These projects work towards ensuring the protection of Malawi's environment, the rich cultural fabric of rural communities and training for local community based organisations.

Any Room in Your Luggage:  A visit to a community project can be an incredibly rewarding experience, if you any room in luggage let us know and we will give you a list of much needed resources! You can either deliver these personally or leave them with your guide who will ensure they are given direct to the community initiative.

Awards & Certifications: In 2013 RSC has been shortlisted for the PURE Awards- recognising their unique style of sustainable tourism! In 2009 RSC was awarded a 2 star eco-certification from Sustainable Travel International. We are the first company in Africa to receive this recognition. In 2012 this award was renewed, highlighting RSC’s continued work within the eco-tourism field. RSC’s linked community visit projects have been chosen to be a part of a dynamic new programme by The Geotourism Development Foundation which aims to promote pro-poor tourism.
