Fastjet, the new budget African airline backed by Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou founder of Easy Jet, announced the launch of its international flight operations yesterday.

The carrier’s first international flight, from Dar es Salaam in Tanzania to Johannesburg, will depart on Friday as the start of a thrice-weekly service which, Fastjet said, will “increase in frequency as soon as consumer demand dictates”.  Prices start at around $100 one way.

Sir Stelios started Easy Jet in 1995 when he was 28. In 2000, EasyJet PLC  was partially floated on the London Stock Exchange. He remains its largest single shareholder.

In September 2011 he  to set upthe new African airline called Fastjet as part of a joint venture with Lonrho plc. The airline started operations on 29 November 2012 with an Airbus A319 aircraft
