UNWTO: Over 1.1 billion tourists travelled abroad in 2014

International tourist arrivals reached 1,138 million in 2014, a 4.7% increase over the previous year, according to the latest UNWTO World Tourism Barometer. For 2015, UNWTO forecasts international tourism to grow by 3% to 4%, further contributing to the global economic recovery. The number of international tourists (overnight visitors) reached 1,138 million in 2014, 51 million more than in 2013. Three International airlines eye Vic Falls

SA: Negotiations still ongoing for SADC Uni-visa

The SA Department of Home Affairs says negotiations for the introduction of the mooted SADC Uni-visa are at an advanced stage. Interest grows for Univisa

The univisa, or Kaza visa, for Zambia and Zimbabwe was officially launched on November 28 and although there is growing interest from tourists, some tour operators are shying away from recommending it due to a lack of knowledge around the application process. Fly-SAX, Kenya’s private charter airline, announced the launch of its new international route to Uganda. Commercial flights between Nairobi and Entebbe, the capital of Uganda, commence tomorrow, 9 January 2015 with twice daily flights. Fly Africa to increase regional routes

Zimbabwean low-cost airline Fly Africa says it will introduce 11 regional routes this year as part of the airline’s expansion programme. The targeted routes include Harare-Lusaka, Harare-Dar es Salaam, Harare-Lubumbashi, Johannesburg-Windhoek, Victoria Falls-Kilimanjaro and Victoria Falls-Cape Town, among others.
