Atta Financial Update: 19.12.2017

Executive summary: If you are among the ninety-nine point nine per cent who missed out on the last big Paulson and Icahn trades of ’07/08 then maybe you will get another shot at something similar in the Land Down Under. In a study of nearly 1,000 Australian mortgage applications over the last twelve months, investment bank UBS found a significant increase in what it unapologetically refers to as ‘liar loans’ (i.e. loans that were extended on the basis of borrower imagination rather than fact).

Atta Financial Update: 12.12.2017

Executive summary for the week of 05-Dec-17 to 12-Dec-17 (week 50) Trust. Credibility. Innovation. That terse minimalist prose is the strapline of OTC traded The Crypto Company, a California based company that - in the last 10 days - has seen its share price achieve geometric astonishment. The little Malibu office where 11 people (according to LinkedIn) bring their lunch to work is now headquarters to a meagre US$12.6 billion market capitalization (is that all?) company - a fortnight ago it was proudly boasting a respectable market cap. of $390m. Getting to this value (or any for that matter) is a challenging challenge - the only public filing relating to Crypto Co reports revenue as “decline to disclose”. However, the website proports that they are in the business giving “institutions and individuals direct exposure to the growth of global blockchain developments". No doubt they are doing that!

Atta Africa Financial Update 05.12.2017

Executive summary: It reads a little bit like the beginning of a riddle: what has no utilitarian value, produces nothing, has a value entirely dependent on artificial scarcity and is worth US$117,000? You would be forgiven for not knowing the answer (or for thinking that 117k is a lot to pay for Donald Trump). No, the answer is: Cryptokitties. The progeny of gaming and blockchain in which users spend real money (real fiat money) to buy, sell, and breed cartoon kittens using the ethereum platform. So far, the top-selling pussy fetched around 247 ethereums, worth US$117,712 at the time.
