About South Africa
Situated in the southern-most part of Africa, South Africa has a population of approximately 60 million people. The country is home to a range of cultures and there are 11 official languages; English is widely spoken throughout the country. South Africa’s time zone is GMT +2 (+1 during the UK summertime) and the national currency is the South African Rand (ZAR).
The main gateways into South Africa are via the cities of Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. Most direct flights are overnight and there is no jet lag when travelling from the UK which is an added advantage for travellers. Direct flights from the UK are under 12 hours and domestic airlift into various parts of the country is vast and plentiful.
South Africa is a yeah-round destination with the climate varying all over the country. Summer runs from November to March, making the southwest hot and dry with average temperatures of 23C. The winter brings mild and & dry temperatures to the tropical northeast coast.
